Which beauty products do you swear by?

I always moisturise with vitamin E cream, usually from Boots.

I also use liquid eyeliner and some mascara if I’m going out.

Do you have a bursting cosmetics bag?

Not any more.

When I was in my twenties I had hundreds of items of make-up, but as I’ve got older I’m now just down to the basics.

What are your top tips for looking good?

I haven’t drunk alcohol since Christmas, for no other reason than I wanted some time off from it, and I’ve noticed a massive difference in how my skin looks.

I don’t get dry skin any more.

How do you freshen up after a day on set?

Even though my character [Jeanne]doesn’t use much make-up, I constantly have dirt and things on my face so it’s great when they remove it all.

The best thing is the spray of cooling water afterwards.

Do you wear make-up every day?

No, I don’t. When I was younger I used to spend so much time panicking about looking good but now I just use make-up for fun.

Do you diet?

Usually after Christmas, I try and lose the half-stone I’ve gained but I don’t believe in denying yourself anything.

I just think, “I’ll cut out the bad stuff for a bit”.

How do you stay in shape?

My youngest child is only three and isn’t at school yet, so I don’t have time for the gym, but I cycle and swim when I can.

And my husband [Rupert Hill] and I are planning to climb Snowdon for his 40th.

What is your signature fragrance?

Coco Mademoiselle by Chanel, and in the summertime I use Jo Malone Wild Fig & Cassis.

How do you pamper yourself?

I don’t go in for full treatments but I love a good massage. It’s my favourite thing for winding down.

Do you have a favourite shop or designer?

I’m a high street girl. I really like Zara, Next and Topshop

Who is your style icon?

Michelle Williams.

She’s really cool and when she’s on the red carpet she can be really glamorous without it looking like a massive effort.

Simon Button Versailles is on Monday at 9.30pm on BBC2.
