Costa has spent the summer AWOL in his native Brazil but has finally headed back to Europe.

The striker was transfer listed this summer and today he would not play for the Blues again.

He wants a return to Atletico but the La Liga club were not willing to meet Chelsea’s £50million demands for a player they wouldn’t be able to field until January due to a transfer ban.

It means Costa is now set to spend the remaining four months of the year away from competitive football before his protracted move in January.

And Spanish newspaper AS claim he is now back in Madrid to work on the transfer.

Costa landed in the Spanish capital yesterday afternoon and spent the evening with his family watching Atletico play Rome on TV.

His former side laboured to a 0-0 draw in Rome during their opening Champions League group game of the campaign.

Chelsea were also on the box last night, they beat Qarabag 6-0 at Stamford Bridge to get their European campaign off to a strong start, but AS claim Costa wasn’t watching the London side.

Antonio Conte is not interested in Costa returning to the first team but Chelsea are fining the player each week he does not come back to train at Cobham.

His car parking space has already gone and Costa is said to have told his team-mates to clear out his locker for him.

The 28-year-old’s family moved out of their Surrey base earlier this month and headed to Spain.
