Padukone, best known to UK audiences as Vin Diesel’s co-star in xXx: Return of Xander Cage, is on a big career high after the huge box office success of the controversial Padmaavat.

In the past, she has worked with Ranbir Kapoor three times, and the pair have often impressed fans with their on-screen rapport.

Now, she is said to be circling a supporting role in director Luv Ranjan’s upcoming project – with Kapoor and Ajay Devgn already attached.

Padukone and Kapoor have previously appeared in Bachna Ae Haseeno in 2008, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani in 2013 and Tamasha in 2015.

A source told DNA India: “Deepika has just heard the synopsis. Nothing has been finalised yet.

“But it is an exciting project and just the fact that she has shown interest is a good sign.”

It’s an exciting time to be a Padukone fan: last week she was also confirmed to be signed up to play an acid attack survivor in a movie she will also produce.

She’ll portray Laxmi Agarwal in the Meghna Gulzar-directed movie, after being “deeply moved” by the story.

“When I heard this story, I was deeply moved as it’s not just one of violence but of strength and courage, hope and victory,” she said, according to Filmfare.

“It made such an impact on me, that personally and creatively, I needed to go beyond and so the decision to turn producer.

“We look forward to commencing our journey on the film.”

Gulzar added: ”I was instinctively convinced that Deepika would do justice to the character and the story.

“Also, her physicality matched with what I’d imagined for Laxmi’s character.

“I’m grateful and encouraged that she was so spontaneous in her decision to do the film.

“When you take a face as beautiful as hers and portray her as an acid attack survivor, the magnitude of the violence and damage is that much more resounding.”

Padukone, 32, is also expected to reprise the role of Serena Unger in the fourth xXx movie at some point in the near future.
