Prince Philip, 96, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, recently handed down an important honour to his grandson Prince Harry, 33.

On March 10 at the inconspicuous time of 8:41 pm Kensington Palace revealed Harry would be taking over from the role of Captain General Royal Marines.

The official royal Twitter account stated: “Prince Harry became Captain General of @RoyalMarines in December 2017, taking over from his grandfather The Duke of Edinburgh who held the role for 64 years.”

Twitter users rushed to congratulate the prince on his new announcement.

One said: “A hard act to follow, I’m sure he will be great.”

Another wrote: “That’s wonderful Prince Harry, we know you will make your Grandfather very proud.”

Prince Philip, 96, has been stepping down from various public roles since his birthday.

This could be the latest in the Duke’s withdrawal from public life – or there could be another reason for the move.

Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, took over from the role from his wife’s beloved father King George, VI.

Given the post in 1953, he has held the position for over half a decade.

This is a ceremonial role as head of the Royal Marines, and uniform is the one that a field marshal wears.

The field marshals uniform is a black uniform, with a red sash across the chest, a golden belt and white gloves.

Could Prince Philip be hoping to see his grandson wearing his uniform on the day of his wedding to Meghan Markle?

Military men are entitled to wear their uniforms for their weddings, and Prince Harry’s nuptial attire could be a sweet nod to his grandfather, as well as to the military.

What could Prince Harry wear on his wedding day? Will he choose a morning suit or uniform?

Prince William wore a red uniform on his wedding day, choosing the tunic of an Irish Guards officer.

However, he could have worn the Royal Air Force uniform, which is blue with a belt.

William holds the honorary rank of Colonel of the Irish Guards, and so was able to wear the red.

Prince Harry was a cornet, lieutenant and captain – and can wear The Blues and Royals, which he wore at the Kate Middleton’s wedding.

What will Meghan Markle wear for her wedding?

Meghan has figured out an ingenious way to pay a touching tribute to the late Princess Diana when she marries her youngest son in May.
