Doctor Stephen Strange is technically dead, turned to dust in the Snap – which fans now know is officially called the Decimation. But a little thing like disintegration and death has never stopped anyone in the Marvel and DC comicbooks. Besides, Strange may be the only person dead or alive who knows how it will all work out. So, presumably he also saw that he will be getting his very own sequel. Maybe not quite as soon as fans had hoped, but major news has just broken in Hollywood today with a release date and more information.

Avengers Endgame will officially bring Marvel Phase Three to an end in April next year, and with it all the intertwined storylines of all the three phases.

Fans know that Spider-Man Far From Home will kick off Phase Four just a few months later in July.

Marvel has already reserved prime release dates for many years ahead, including those for its Phase Four movies, with the Black Widow standalone, the introduction of The Eternals and the new Shang -Chi films all already said to be in pre-production. Many also expect a Black Panther sequel to be part of Phase Four but there has been no official confirmation yet.

Doctor Strange, however, is now expected to take the fifth Phase Four slot.

The Hollywood Reporter announced: “Scott Derrickson, who directed and co-wrote the mystical Marvel hero’s initial 2016 outing, has quietly finalised a deal to helm the new installment.

“A search for a writer to pen the script is about to get underway.

“Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the plan is for the script to be hashed out in 2019 with an eye toward a spring 2020 production start. If all goes well, the movie would be casting its spell on audiences in May 2021.”

“Benedict Cumberbatch will return as Stephen Strange, the good doctor turned master of the mystic arts, as will Benedict Wong, who played his right-hand man, Wong. Rachel McAdams, who played Stephen Strange’s love interest, is likely to return as well.”

This means there are three empty slots following Spider-Man 2.

The Black Widow film is believed to be the furthest along in devlopment and most likely to nab the May 1, 2020 date. This leaves November 6, 2020, and February 12, 2021.

Guardians of the Glaxy had been a certainty for an early slot before the firing of James Gunn and suspension of production indefinitely.
