US President Donald Trump, 71, posted a tweet on Monday honouring the American labor movement for US public holiday Labor Day.

He wrote: “We are building our future with American hands, American labor, American iron, aluminium and steel. Happy #LaborDay!”

But his tweet sent mixed messaged to his followers.

Alongside his celebratory words, he posted a picture of himself and Melania from her first ever Congressional Picnic which took place in June.

For the occasion she wore a white midi-length dress with a grid print

But while the First Lady looked stunning in her ensemble, many people on Twitter have picked up on the fact the frock is Italian, rather than American.

One user on Twitter wrote: “Honestly just confused about this.”

The fit-and-flare dress is by Greek designer Mary Katrantzou, and its listing on Saks Fifth Avenue’s website says it was manufactured in Italy.

It was originally listed for $2,255 (£1,731) but it was on sale for $760 (£583) when Melania wore it in June.

Due to popular demand the dress is now sold out.

Last week, Melania’s wardrobe came under fire again as she headed to Texas to support relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey

The First Lady left Washington DC wearing a green bomber jacket, stylish aviator sunglasses and a pair of black six inch court shoes.

The shoes were by designer Manolo Blahnik, but they became the subject of criticism on Twitter.

One user wrote: “Dear Melania, 9 inch spike heels aren’t the best for working soup lines or rescuing folks.”

Melania did change into a pair of Adidas Stan Smith trainers while on the plane to Texas, so she was not actually wearing the heels when meeting disaster victims or viewing the flood damage.

The White House hit back, branding the criticism “sad”.
