Han Solo Movie: Who is Qi'Ra? Who is Emilia Clarke's character?
If Han is known for being in the moral grey area, joining him is Qi’Ra.
Who is Qi’ra in the Han Solo Movie?
Fans are introduced to her in the trailer as Han’s childhood friend — the two grew up on Corellia together.
By the time they’re reunited, however, it seems Qi’ra has gone up in the world. Sort of.
Qi’ra is the top Lieutenant in Dryden Vos’ gang Crimson Dawn, and she first appears with perfect hair, perfect lipstick, and perfect clothes, a far cry from her roots.
HAN SOLO MOVIE: WHO IS VAL? WHO IS THANDIE NEWTON’S CHARACTER
As Clarke told EW: “If you have got a really glamorous lady in a really sordid environment you kind of know that maybe the glamour is hiding a few rough roads.”
Her motive? According to Emilia Clarke, it is boiled down to one thing: survival.
Her role in Solo goes beyond being a plot device, though she is responsible for introducing Han to Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover).
Qi’ra is at home in the underworld, which Clarke describes as: “dangerous and sordid and ugly, and really, really dark.”
Given there is no mention of Qi’ra in any of the other Star Wars movies, there is plenty of speculation as to what happens between Qi’ra and Han to cause that silence.
Solo has kept quiet with many salient details around its newer characters, like Qi’ra and Thandie Newton’s Val.
Clarke did confirm that Qi’ra and Han had some unresolved tension. “There is obviously the romantic side of things.”
“But they grew up together. So they were kids together,” she added.
Han may have a chip on his shoulder towards the opulence of the Crimson Dawn gang, Qi’ra fit right in.
Also described as a femme fatale, Qi’ra adds an element of film noir to Solo, whose director Ron Howard took over from Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
How she managed to go from street urchin criminal to oligarch lieutenant will wait to be seen.
Qi’ra is another addition to the growing number of complex and empathetic female characters in the Star Wars franchise, which seems to be stepping up its game of representation.
