Harry Potter: Why aren't Dumbledore and Grindelwald sharing scenes in Fantastic Beasts 2?

One of Harry Potter’s most loved characters is the white-haired headmaster and all-around badass Dumbledore.

When the Fantastic Beasts sequel was announced, with a plot revolving around Dumbledore as a young wizard, fans went wild.

Given the movie is called Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald, fans rightly anticipated an exploration of the relationship between Dumbledore and Grindelwald.

Why aren’t Dumbledore and Grindelwald sharing scenes in Fantastic Beasts 2?

Jude Law, who plays a young Dumbledore, spoke to Entertainment Weekly and revealed the slightly shocking fact.

Grindelwald, played by Johnny Depp, and Dumbledore don’t share a single scene together in the entire Fantastic Beasts sequel.

Law reminded fans Fantastic Beasts is only part two of a much longer story.

“I’ve always admired him from afar, but we don’t know each other, and I’ve not yet met him on this,” Law said.

“In many ways that suits the relationship as it’s been many years since they’ve seen each other.

“So there’s complexity in that that’s fun to mine. Again, the past will reveal itself.”

The end of the first Fantastic Beasts movie saw the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander.

But then Grindelwald escapes custody and begins gathering followers, most of whom are unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise wizards and witches up to rule over all non-magical beings.

Dumbledore enlists his former student Newt Scamander to help thwart Grindelwald’s plans, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead.

Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

The lack of a Dumbledore v. Grindelwald ex-lovers showdown may disappoint fans and lead to a Hobbit problem – where the movie feels purposefully drawn out to make more money.

Regardless, fans will turn out to see it, decked head to toe in wizarding gear no doubt.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is in UK cinemas Friday, November 16, 2018.
