Hereditary movie reviews: ‘Most TERRIFYING horror in years, deeply UNSETTLING’

There’s been something of a mainstream horror revival in the last couple of years.

Recent gamechangers like Split, Get Out, It and A Quiet Place have shown how critics and awards shows can take a genre seriously, when often it’s reduced to trashy gory B-movies.

The latest, Hereditary, hits cinemas in two weeks and currently has 100% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and a wave of five star ratings.

The “deeply unsetting” film’s synopsis reads: “When Ellen passes away, her daughter’s family begins to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry.

“The more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited.”

Here are a selection of reviews for Hereditary, with one going as far as to call it this generation’s The Exorcist.

Vanity Fair
Hereditary is a terrifically unsettling look at the howling despair of grief, combined with that good, old-fashioned fear of what demons we may have inherited from our parents.

Hollywood Reporter
Hereditary takes the core haunting element of a spirit with a malevolent agenda and runs with it in a seemingly endless series of unexpected directions over two breathless hours of escalating terror that never slackens for a minute.

Time Out
A harrowing story of unthinkable family tragedy that veers into the realm of the supernatural, Hereditary takes its place as a new generation’s The Exorcist — for some, it will spin heads even more savagely.

Slash Film
The film’s deliberate pacing, commitment to atmosphere over cheap scares, and stellar cast, led by the remarkable Collette, make this work an early contender for one of the best horror films of the year.

Nerdist
Hereditary is one of the most unsettling movies I’ve ever seen, and I couldn’t sleep because of it.

New York Post
This remarkable directorial debut from Ari Aster builds on classical horror tropes – the occult, possession, mental illness- to craft its own unique spin on terror.

RogerEbert.com
A deeply unsettling film, the kind of horror movie that pulls from relatable human emotions like grief and resentment to ultimately become an absolute nightmare.

Hereditary is released in UK cinemas on June 15, 2018.
