The country’s disaster agency stated the exact number of people injured is unknown.

It is believe the fire was caused by a pipe welding on the site in western province of Aceh.

The monumental blaze started at 1.30am local time (6.30pm GMT Tuesday) and has set at least three houses alight.

It is understood the flames are still out of control.

Police declared 10 bodies have been recovered and the death toll is expected to rise.

Dozens of people were taken to hospital in the provincial capital of Banda Aceh.

The state-owned oil company named Pertamina has been assisting firefighters at the scene.

It is understood the fire emerged from alleged illegal drilling at the well.

Wahyu Kuncoro, a police official, declared that the number of injured sits at 40.

He went on: “We suspect this is a well drilled by the community…and we suspect there was someone smoking in the area at the time.”

Eastern parts of Aceh feature several oil mining operations – it is understood that these are often operated illegally by local villagers.
