Inside G20 Summit riots: Front line footage shows rioters and police during brutal clash

Black-clad rioters attacked police after hijacking a protest, which claimed to be against “politically motivated violence”.

Journalist Ozgur Uludag uploaded a video of a group displaying a banner, which reads: “against the politically motivated violence of the G20”.

However, scenes soon turn violent. Men dressed in black with their faces covered are shown darting across the streets of the St Pauli borough of Hamburg during brutal clashes with riot police.

Around a dozen rioters start the conflict as they hurl what appear to be glass bottles at riot police, who are retreating down the street.

They are then joined by more protesters, who are each wielding a weapon, begin attacking the police who have retreated into the distance.

Rioters begin to fortify their position by creating a makeshift wall made from benches and tables in the middle of the road, before charging towards the police.

The footage ends with a loud explosion being heard in the background as the black-clad protesters begin to retreat themselves.

At least 76 police officers were injured during clashes with the “Welcome to Hell” protesters, who have gained their notorious name after displaying the slogan while greeting Donald Trump and other world leaders arriving for the two-day summit.

Hamburg police said that around 1,000 protesters refused to remove masks and those in two ‘black blocs’ used bottles, sticks and iron rods against the officers.

Police expected around 100,000 protesters in the port city, some 8,000 of whom are deemed by security forces to be ready to commit violence.

Riot police have been forced to use water cannons as an attempt to disperse violent demonstrators.

‘Welcome to Hell’ organiser Andreas Blechschmidt said the motto is a “combative message… but its also meant to symbolise that G20 policies worldwide are responsible for hellish conditions like hunger, war and the climate disaster”.

He told AFP that activists would seek to blockade access to the summit venue and, as usual, “reserve for themselves the option of militant resistance” against police.

Hamburg’s residents express their concerns over the protests happening on their doorsteps.

One young mother told a local journalist: “My daughter is afraid.”

And posters displayed around the city advised protesters to “take care! The kids are afraid. Kids inside – stop!”
