The young star, real name Malcolm James McCormick, dated Ariana Grande until May this year. The pair made a prominent UK appearance together when they were united on-stage at Grande’s One Love Manchester concert in June 2017.

He topped the Us Billboard 200 album chart in 2011 with his debut album Blue Slid Park when he was just 19.

TMZ and other US outlets are reporting that the singer and rapper “was found Friday (today) around noon at his San Fernando Valley home and was pronounced dead at the scene.”

There has been no official statement yet about the cause of death.

TMZ broke the news and added: “Miller died of an apparent overdose.”

The performer had spoken openly about his struggles with a drug combination of promethazine and codeine known as “purple drank” or “lean” which Miller admitted he took to cope with the pressure of his 2012 Macadelic Tour in 2012.

Miller told Complex: “I love lean, it’s great. I was not happy and I was on lean very heavy. I was so f***ed up all the time it was bad. My friends couldn’t even look at me the same. I was lost.”

The star continued to face his addictions, explore his own frailties and fears, and grapple with concepts of life and death throughout his career, culminating in his very last video for Self Care.

Miller dated Grande for almost two years and after they separated in May he was charged with driving under the influence and hit and run after allegedly crashing into and knocking down a power pole and fleeing the scene with two passengers.

The talented young star had just released his fifth album, Swimming, last month. His was frequently praised for the depth and breath of issues he addressed and the fearless autobiographical nature of his work.

The lead single Self Care featured a video with Miller trapped inside a coffin marked with the words ‘Memento Mori’, which mean ‘Remember death’ but represent the Medieval reflection upon mortality and the transience of life.

The artist is also widely known for his 2014 mixtape Faces which includes the track Funeral. Among the 24 tracks are numerous references to his drug use and meditations on life and death.

The lyrics for the song include:

It’s the last day of my life, Party like it’s the last day of your life

This the motherf***ing last day of my life, Party like it’s the last day of your life

Forever I melt and float away like waves in the ocean, Staring inside of Heaven’s eyes, the gates will never open

I’m smoking on this field of hope, waiting till my deal gets closed, I keep getting hotter but all I seem to feel is cold

22 don’t feel so old but I think I’m 82

Tributes have started to pour in from fellow artists.

Fans have flooded social media, remembering a man who was “more than just Ariana Grande’s ex-boyfriend.”

Among the heartbroken messages was a poignant reference to those lyrics from his friend Vanilla Gorilla: “LETS ALL SAY A PRAYER TO GOD FOR MAC MiLLER TO GO TO HEAVEN.”
