The 2015 George Miller action movie Fury Road was the most recent instalment in a long-running franchise.

Mad Max, the original, started way back in 1979 and starred Mel Gibson, but the new iteration features Tom Hardy, a far less problematic actor, in the eponymous role.

Charlize Theron also starred, adding a much-needed element of female empowerment to the beloved franchise.

Will there be a Mad Max Sequel?

The answer is yes. Probably. Hopefully. All things being well.

However, no one is quite sure when that sequel will be, including the star himself, Tom Hardy.

Mad Max: Fury Road not only garnered stellar reviews from fans and critics, it also received ten Academy Awards nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.

This year’s San Diego Comic-Con saw Tom Hardy in a panel with Variety, talking about the possibility of the sequel.

Hardy revealed that not only is he willing to appear in another Mad Max movie, he and the rest of the Mad Max team are simply waiting on the word go.

“It was always the plan to do three of them, so I think we’re still waiting on being given the opportunity and the green light to go ahead on the next one,” Hardy said

“But when I engaged on that there was a plethora of material on it.”

Warner Bros has the final say, and though the movie was undeniably a success, the whims of the studio are a mystery unto themselves.

“Obviously, it belongs to Warner Bros. so it would be them who green-lit it.”

“But a lot of projects are in radial, you know you wait for something to land when it’s real, and as soon as it’s real we’ll jump on it,” Hardy said.

While fans would be thrilled by two more Mad Max movies, there may be a bit of a delay in seeing them come to fruition.

Miller, the auteur of Mad Max and director of Fury Road, sued Warner Bros for $7 million over money owed to his production companies.

Everyone wanting a Mad Max sequel will just have to wait to see if both sides can settle amicably enough to work on another Mad Max.
