Mamma Mia 2 HOLDS OFF Mission Impossible 6 Fallout at UK box office
They’re two of the biggest movies of the summer, but did film fans really expect Mission: Impossible – Fallout not to debut at No 1?
Incredibly Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again held the top spot for a second week in a row with £7.1 million over a three-day weekend.
According to Screen Daily this is only a 27% drop from its £9.7 million debut last week.
As it stands Mamma Mia 2 has made £27 million in the UK, but still has a long way to go to beat the original which made £68.6 million in 2008.
Meanwhile Cruise’s Mission Impossible 6 debuted at No 2 with £5.4 million which heightens to £7.3 million if you include previews.
The figure is still impressive as Fallout’s predecessor, 2015’s Rogue Nation, debuted with £4.4 million.
In fact domestically the film topped the franchise’s previous record of $57.8 million for 2000”s Mission Impossible 2, with $61.5 million.
Meanwhile globally the new spy flick currently stands at $155 million, compared to Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’s $167 million.
It’s been just three years since Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation hit cinemas, which was the shortest time in between films in the franchise to date.
So with this in mind, and the renewed strength of the franchise as a whole, perhaps Mission: Impossible 7 is only two or three years away.
Mission: Impossible – Fallout and Mamma Mia! Here We Got Again are out now.
