Mamma Mia 2: Is THIS a clue that Meryl Streep’s Donna IS dead? Song leaves fans in tears

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again is in cinemas next Friday, but the soundtrack album has been released to stream and buy today (July 13).

It ends with Streep performing The Day Before You Came – although interestingly it appears only on the digital and streaming versions of the album, not the physical CD.

The ABBA original was recorded and released in 1982 and is their second-longest song, clocking in at just under six minutes long.

It was the final song ABBA recorded until their upcoming two new 2018 tracks; and although some have argued it is about a woman having her life turned around by the arrival of a new man, others have interpreted the “you” of the title lyric to be death.

Over a haunting piano backing, Streep sings: “Oh yes, I’m sure my life was well within it’s usual frame, the day before you came.”

Donna’s plot in Mamma Mia 2 remains a mystery: she has barely been seen in any new footage in the trailers, sparking speculation that Donna may have died, and her appearances in the sequel are ghost-like.

Hearing the new song, one person wrote on Twitter: “The last song is the day before you came THAT SONG IS REALLY ABOUT A WOMEN DYING WTF SHE DIES GOD DAMN IT.”

“The Day Before You Came sung by Meryl Streep on the Mamma Mia Here We Go Again soundtrack is GLORIOUS!” posted another.

“Meryl Streep singing ‘The Day Before you Came’ on the Mamma Mia 2 Soundtrack has broken me,” a third wrote.

“the day before you came oh my GOD i’m crying,” lamented someone else.

“THE DAY BEFORE YOU CAME by Meryl Streep is MAJESTIC,” read another tweet.

As for whether Donna is alive or dead in the film remains to be seen, but given that Streep doesn’t appear on the soundtrack at all until near the end, it seems safe to assume she won’t have much of a physical presence.

Lily James plays her younger self in the movie, and has the lion’s share of songs on the album.
