Margot Kidder dead: WATCH late Superman star as Lois Lane in iconic movie

The actress has died age 69 at her home in Montana, it’s been reported today.

She played Lois Lane in 1978, 1980, 1983 and 1987; playing opposite the likes of Christopher Reeve and Gene Hackman.

She continued to work a great deal as her career progressed, and you may have seen her in recent years in Smallville, Brothers & Sisters or The L Word.

In an interview in 2016, she told Vulture Hound of her Superman casting: “I really wanted the part. It was frightening as all auditions are.

“I had my first audition then I flew from Montana, where I lived, to London to do a screen test.

“I went, ‘I gotta get this movie because your marriage is really bad but you don’t have the strength to get out. But if you get a big movie you can get out’, so there was that motivation.

“So then I went to the producers and started telling everyone in the room what needed to come across in the scene.

“I had to communicate that I am really in love with Superman no matter what.”

Kidder’s representative confirmed that she died in her sleep yesterday.

“The reality of my life has been grand and wonderful, punctuated by these odd blips and burps of madness,” she told People after being placed in psychiatric care.

Tributes have been rolling in, with one person saying on Twitter: “Aw jeez. Rest in peace, Margot Kidder. There’s so much of what she does in the Superman movies that’s burned into my memory permanently.”

Another wrote: “I don’t think Margot Kidder ever really got credit for the skill of what she’s doing in the SUPERMAN movies: adding just the right dose of ’70s cynicism and saltiness to make them contemporary, without throwing off the gee-whiz sunniness of the enterprise. God, she was good.”

“RIP to Margot Kidder, who made sure my generation knew just how awesome Lois Lane was,” tweeted a third.
