Mary Poppins Returns is the next much anticipated Disney film to grace our screens, coming to cinemas later this year.

The all-new film will see a revitalised cast meshed in with some old favourites in a follow-on storyline from the first film.

Emily Blunt will play the magical nanny in this new iteration, in a departure from her traditional thriller and sci-fi roles.

A new trailer for the film has recently ben released, showing a new story which hopes to capture the magic of the original with some surprises.

Disney has revealed the new film will be set years after the first in a depression-era 1930’s London, following the lives of a much older Michael and Jane Banks (Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer).

Michael has remained in the classic Cherry-Tree Lane residence where the first film took place, with his three children.

After the death of his wife, Mary returns to help him and sister Jane rediscovers the fun of their youth.

Accompanied by a jovial streetlamp lighter named Jack (played by Lin-Manuel Miranda) Mary takes the family for a second round of lighthearted adventure.

When will Mary Poppins be released in the UK?

Mary Poppins is destined to be a Winter blockbuster, with a Christmas time release date.

In the UK, the film will come out on December 21, just four days before Christmas itself.

The US will get it slightly sooner however, with a release date of December 19.

Those people still unsure about the reboot may be pleased to see a major member of the older cast return however.

Mary Poppins Returns will add a familiar face to its star-studded line-up, as Dick Van Dyke makes a return to the big screen.

The actor has not stopped since he began his film career in 1963, appearing in a selection of huge blockbusters despite his advanced age.

His role in Mary Poppins returns is a throwback to his lesser known part in the original film, when he adopted the moniker Navckid Keyd.

The 92-year-old actor is known for his part as chimney sweep Bert in the original, but he also played a smaller part as Mr Dawes Sr. the bank manager (in heavy makeup).

In Mary Poppins returns, the actor will play his son, Mr Dawes Jr.

Dick Van Dyke is the only returning member of the original cast sadly, as Julie Andrews has confirmed that she will not make a cameo in the reboot.

There are however a large number of other huge Hollywood names cast in Mary Poppins Returns.

Emily Blunt will be reunited with Devil Wears Prada star Meryl Streep, who plays Mary Poppins’ cousin Topsy Turvy.

Also joining will be Meryl Streep’s Mamma Mia! co-stars Colin Firth and Julie Walters, as housekeeper Ellen and William Weatherall Wilkins.
