Who is in the Mary Queen of Scots cast?

Both main actresses are almost unrecogniseable with white powdered faces, no eyebrows and towering wigs (particularly in Elizabeth’s case).

Playing the eponymous queen is Saoirse Ronan, and her rival cousin Queen Elizabeth I is portrayed by Margot Robbie.

Ronan has risen quickly to fame at a young age (she is 24) for her inimitable performances in movies like Brooklyn, Atonement and the recent hit Lady Bird.

Like Ronan, Robbie is a critically lauded actress, particularly for her lead role in the 2017 movie I, Tonya where she played controversial figure skater Tonya Harding.

Many of the other cast members are just as recognisable with David Tennant joining alongside Guy Pearce, Jack Lowden and Gemma Chan.

Mary Queen of Scots explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart.

She was the Queen of France at 16 and widowed only two years later.

Mary ignores pressure to remarry, deciding to return to her native Scotland and reclaim her throne.

Scotland and England, however, are under the rule of Elizabeth I.

Focus Features adds: “Rivals in power and in love, and female regents in a masculine world, the two must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence.

“Determined to rule as much more than a figurehead, Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth’s sovereignty.

“Betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones – and change the course of history.”

Due to Mary’s attempted coup of Elizabeth’s throne, the Queen of Scots is sentenced to time in prison and is eventually executed.
