Meghan Markle wedding dress: Did Duchess of Sussex base gown on these royal brides?

Meghan Markle, 36, became the Duchess of Sussex when she married Prince Harry, 33, at the Royal Wedding yesterday.

The new royal stunned the world with her Givenchy-designed gown, created by British designer Clare Waight Keller.

Style-watchers were surprised by the simple, pared-back design, but it is not the first time a royal bride has worn a dress of this nature.

In fact, not one, but two royal brides have walked down the aisle in dresses very similar to Meghan’s.

Could Prince Harry’s new wife have based her design around these dresses?

Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden, 40, wed Daniel, Duke of Västergötland in 2010.

For her wedding day, she wore an ivory silk off-the-shoulder gown designed by Par Engsheden.

It featured a five-metre train which came out at the waist.

She paired her dress with an extravagant long veil.

Victoria’s wedding day look is very similar to Meghan’s, who also wore an off-the-shoulder silk dress with long veil.

Another bride who looked radiant in an off-the-shoulder design was Princess Charlene of Monaco.

She walked down a red carpet at her star-studded day in a silk Armani gown.

This was embellished with delicate embroidery.

Charlene’s veil was also a show-stopper, trailing behind her on top of a long train.

Like Kate Middleton before her, Meghan didn’t stop at one dress, and changed into a second gown for the evening reception.

As the couple were seen heading towards Frogmore House for the reception, Meghan showcased her second wedding dress of the day – a gown by Stella McCartney. 

The Palace announced the dress details: “The Bride’s evening dress is designed by Stella McCartney and is a bespoke lily white high neck gown made of silk crepe.

“The Bride is wearing shoes from Aquazurra made in silky satin, with nude mesh, with soles painted in baby blue.”

The Duchess of Sussex’s second dress was, like her first, a simple and elegant affair which showed off her shoulders.

While it was fitted at the top, it flared out at the bottom into a loose skirt perfect for dancing.
