Mexico Open 2018 results: LIVE WTA scores from Acapulco with Heather Watson in action
It has been six years since Watson won her first title on the singles tour but she made a name for herself in the mixed doubles in 2016 after winning the Wimbledon championship with Henri Kontinven.
In the WTA singles tour though, Watson has dropped down to 74 in the world rankings having reached as high as 38 in 2015.
The 25-year-old’s last tour title came in 2016 at the Monterrey Open where she beat Caroline Wozniacki and Caroline Garcia on her way to winning the tournament.
She faces a tough draw where she could meet second seed Kristina Mladenovic in the last-16.
American Stephens is the favourite to lift the trophy while Australia’s Daria Gavrilova is seeded third after being granted a wildcard.
