Movies set in 2019: What Blade Runner, Akira, The Island and MORE predicted for this year

Blade Runner (1982)

Almost 40 years since its original release and we’re finally at the year in which Blade Runner is set.

And just like hoverboards in Back to the Future, we don’t have robot replicants or flying cars as it predicted just yet.

Of course, the Harrison Ford-led sci-fi classic is set in November 2019, so at least there’s still time.

Although judging by the dystopian look of Los Angeles the weather’s certainly set to take a turn for the worse.

Akira (1988)

This acclaimed anime predicted that Tokyo would be destroyed in July 1988, resulting in World War III.

And by 2019, the city is now known as Neo-Tokyo, full of corruption, terrorism and gang violence.

The Island (2005)

Michael Bay’s sci-fi thriller starred Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson as two clones who, in 2019, discover they’ve been replicated for organ harvesting.

Daybreakers (2009)

According to this film, a plague will transform most of the world’s population into vampires this year, as we face a human blood shortage.

Geostorm (2017)

Gerard Butler’s disaster flop depicts a version of 2019 where an epic storm faces wiping out the world thanks to malfunctioning climate-controlling satellites.

2019, After the Fall of New York (1983)

In 2019, the world has succumbed to nuclear war and radiation prevents humans from reproducing. Survivors are sent to a savages-controlled New York to rescue a mysteriously fertile woman.

The New Barbarians (1983)

Bizarrely there was another Italian film made in 1983 and set in 2019 after a nuclear war. In this one, a gang called The Templars raid settlers to purge the Earth, while a former member of the group called Scorpion tries to stop them.

Steel Frontier (1995)

Another post-nuclear war in 2019; this sci-fi Western sees a gunslinger challenger desert outlaws who invaded a survivors town.

Heatseeker (1995)

And last, but not least, apparently by 2019, there would be cyborg kickboxing championships.
