The sporting spectacle will be held in Pyeongchang County – 40 miles from the Korean demilitarised zone – amid soaring political tensions.

North Korea‘s power-crazed despot Kim Jong-un has repeatedly refused to halt his nuclear and missile tests.

And Team GB officials have hatched top-secret doomsday plans if World War 3 breaks out during the Winter Games in February 2018.

British Olympic Association chief executive Bill Sweeney confirmed the organisation was working on an “all possible contingency plans”.

He said: “Clearly there is an issue around the escalation of tensions between North and South Korea and the Americans.

“We talk to the Foreign Office and the embassy in Korea on a weekly basis, we had conversations with them last week.

“Don’t forget there is an open and active British embassy in Pyongyang. They have families there and they are still there.”

Mr Sweeney added: “The South Koreans have lived with this for 60 years and tensions have gone up and down.

“There seems a higher level this time, obviously.

“We will go there with a clearly laid out evacuation plan. I don’t think it will be necessary.

“The health and welfare of the delegation is our number one priority. We will do everything possible around the issue.”

Team GB chef de mission, Mike Hay, said athletes were being updated on a regular basis about the security in the region.

He said: “It’s the pinnacle of an athlete’s career so it would be a very big decision to decide not to go.

“We are talking hypotheticals. It’s a safe place to travel right now. We certainly felt very safe last week.

“We are conscious it’s 65km from the Korean demilitarised zone but everything seemed really good.”

Earlier tonight, Kim’s evil communist regime appeared to confirm plans for an atmospheric nuclear test over the Pacific Ocean.

A senior North Korean diplomat said the chilling threat should not be taken lightly and urged the US to prepare itself.

Ri Yong Pil said: “The foreign minister is very well aware of the intentions of our supreme leader, so I think you should take his words literally.”

He was referring to comments from foreign minister Ri Yong Ho, who warned Pyongyang could detonate a hydrogen bomb over the Pacific.
