Star Wars 8: Rian Johnson reveals 'EERIE' Leia, Han Solo Force ghost scenes

Johnson gave a huge interview to the New York Times today with the confirmation that Luke and Rey will be the main focus of Episode 8.

He also revealed why the final Leia scenes will be so powerful and dropped a tantalising comment about Han Solo coming back as Force ghost.

Johnson called Fisher’s last-ever Star wars scenes a “complete performance” but what does that mean?

Many rumours and theories believe that Leia could die at the end of The Last Jedi and Johnson confirmed that there was no need to reshoot or alter any of Fisher’s scenes following her shock death.

He said: “When she (Fisher) passed away, we were pretty deep into postproduction. When we came back to the edit room after New Year’s, it was so hard. We went through all her scenes.

“I felt very strongly that we don’t try to change her performance. We don’t adjust what happens to her in this movie.

“Emotionally, you can’t help recontextualise it, now that she’s gone. It’s almost eerie how there are scenes that have an emotional resonance and a meaning, especially now. She gives a beautiful and complete performance in this film.”

Johnson also explained how Luke and Rey are the centre of The Last Jedi above all the other characters.

He said: “Luke Skywalker, right now, is the last Jedi. There’s always wiggle room in these movies — everything is from a certain point of view — but coming into our story, he is the actual last of the Jedi.

“The heart of the movie is Luke and Rey. It follows all the other characters, but its real essence is the development of the two of them. And it’s absolutely tied up in that question of, What is Luke’s attitude toward the Jedi?”

With rumours flying that Hayden Christensen’s Anakin Skywalker will be back as a Force Ghost, The New York Times couldn’t resist asking whether Han Solo would also return in the same way.

Johnson said: “Han Solo as a Force ghost, obviously. And Jar Jar, he’s Snoke. Everything I’m dropping is gold, right here.”

Sadly for fan hopes and theorists everywhere, it seems that is merely what passes as irony in a galaxy far, far away…
