The sudden murder of the super-villain in The Last Jedi last year split fans, especially as many had speculated over his place and backstory in the wider Star Wars  universe. Kylo Ren slaughtered his master in a moment that paved the way for he himself to become the Big Bad of the new trilogy; having previously been somewhat conflicted. So what does Serkis, who played Snoke, think of his surprise exit?

“It was a bit of a shock but I could see exactly why they were goin gthat route,” he told Games Radar, “and I think it was a huge surprise in the middle of the film.

“But I really loved the scene where Rey plays with Snoke. That scene was a fantastically written scene.

“I just wish he’d survived, but who knows?”

Asked if he’d return for next year’s Episode 9, Serkis admitted: “Yeah, of course. He was a great character.”

Fans are continuing to theorise about Snoke’s origins, which could be explored in a shock twist in Episode 9.

But what seems much more likely is that they’ll be explored in another, low-key medium such as a comic or novel further down the line.

For now, work continues on Episode 9 – with a teaser or trailer widely rumoured to be arriving this side of New Year.

Mark Hamill, reprising the iconic role of Luke Skywalker, has spoken out on how privacy on set has been massively stepped-up.

“Nowadays it’s like working for some secret deep state government organization, like being in the CIA,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

“They’re going to send [Episode 9] rewrites over to Prague on this dark red paper that gives you a headache to read.”

He elaborated: “They’re going to fly [the rewrites] over with somebody from the company.

“They’re going to come and give it to me and wait for me to read it before I give it back. So no pressure!

“You can’t even keep it overnight. But that’s the way it is now.”

Star Wars 9 is out in December 2019.
