Star Wars 9: Final proof Rey WILL need a new lightsaber – What colour will it be?

The film will come two years after the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi; in which the iconic weapon was destroyed. That lightsaber had a long journey: it was Anakin’s throughout the Clone Wars and taken by Obi-Wan after a battle on Mustafar in Revenge of the Sith. It was then passed to Luke Skywalker, who lost it when he battled Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back; and it ultimately became part of Maz Kanata’s curios in The Force Awakens, where Rey found it.

However, in The Last Jedi, she struggled for possession of it with Kylo Ren – and it was broken.

A new close-up image shared on The Star Wars Show, and noticed by fans on Reddit, has highlighted that the vital Kyber crystal itself is broken in the saber.

This means that it is irreparable, and Rey will need a new one either before or during the events of Episode 9.

So what colour will it be?

According to the Star Wars Wikia pages, the colour of a lightsaber is said to indicate a Jedi’s class: blue for a Jedi Guardian, who uses the Force on a physical level; green for a Jedi Consular, who prefers to reflect on the mysteries of the Force; and yellow for a Jedi Sentinel, who hones their skills in a balance of combat and scholarly pursuits.

Purple and orange lightsabers have also been documented in canon, with dark side users favouring synthetic crystals to give a red colour.

So what colour will Rey have? Will we see another blue or green weapon, in line with her predecessors in the saga?

Or will we see a lesser-seen colour – like purple, which was the colour of Mace Windu’s?

Star Wars 9 is currently in production in locations that include Pinewood in the UK and Jordan.

It will bring to an end the current sequel trilogy, and also the Skywalker saga as a whole.

After that will be at least two new TV shows: The Mandalorian, which is in production now; and a series involving Diego Luna’s Rogue One character.

Star Wars: Episode 9 is out in December 2019.
