Star Wars Last Jedi news: Is Snoke actually Emperor Palpatine? Theory gives strong answer

Amongst various Episode VIII: The Last Jedi rumours that have been flying around in recent months, Snoke’s identity has been discussed more and more often.

But Thor Skywalker has given a very good reason as to why theories suggesting the Supreme Leader is Palpatine or even Anakin Skywalker are probably wrong: they just don’t serve the story.

Whilst that kind of revelation would be a great dramatic twist, it would also be relatively pointless.

“I don’t expect to get some deep and amazing story for Snoke,” Thor Skywalker said in a new video.

“It’s very possible his goals are simple and straightforward… At most he will somehow be connected to Rey and her purpose of bringing balance to the Force. And at the least, he’ll just be an ancient evil of some kind.

“There’s a zero per-cent chance he’s a character we’ve met before or even heard of before.”

He added of the possible outlandish twists: “You have to ask yourself if they’ll serve the story, or fit into it, or even do a disservice to it.

“For example, if Snoke is Palpatine come back from the dead, that pretty much renders the end of the original trilogy meaningless, and the sacrifice of Vader or Anakin [at the end of Return of the Jedi] moot.

“Same would go for Snoke being Anakin reincarnated. Can’t we just let Anakin have the perfect ending at the end of Return of the Jedi?”

It seems the most sensible possibility is for Snoke to just be as he is on face value – an ancient villain we have never seen before.

“Snoke is going to be something new and different, and will take a backseat to the story of our heroes,” Thor Skywalker concluded.

Star Wars Episode VIII: Return of the Jedi is out on December 15.
