It looks like Ewan McGregor is finally heading back to a galaxy far, far away.

The star shocked fans when he appeared at the Solo: A Star Wars Story US premiere on May 10, something he hasn’t done since his own prequel triology.

Excited fans tought it might be a clue that he would cameo in the Han Solo origins tale, but that didn’t happen. However, it looks like something far bigger is on the horizon.

Finally.

Ob-Wan already saved the galaxy more than once, can he also save the faltering Star Wars movie franchise?

A major Obi-Wan Kenobi film announcement was expected at the D-23 Disney Expo last July, but was the news that the directors of the Solo movie had been fired prompted major Disney firefighting.

Since then rumours have continued to build but at last it has been reported that McGergor is back in the game, with script and filming schedules lining up and a likely release date.

Star Wars commentator Miek Zeroh said: “Reportedly, Ewan McGregor is in talks with both Disney and Lucasfilm to reprise his role as the iconic Jedi master.

“We do know this – they will begin shooting in April 2019. There’s no script as yet. We have heard they are going to start writing at the end of summer and aim for completion at the end of fall (autumn).”

He added: “Ewan Mcgregor would be able to read the script by January, February latest, and then they begin filming in April.”

If this all goes ahead fans can exect to see the movies in cinemas at the end of 2020.

Star Wars 9 will be released in December 2019. After the recent box office troubles faced by the Solo movie, Disney has been looking at its release schedules and reported to be abandoning any future Star Wars summer release dates.

McGregor has been open about his hopes to play Obi-Wan again.

He told French magazine Premiere last year: “I’ve always thought there was a story to tell between my last one and Alec Guinness’s first one. It would be fun to film that story now I’m older. I’d be the right age. I’m 45, Alec Guinness was what, 60? I could do two of them!”

Darth Maul’s recent Solo cameo sets him up to be the main viallian for the Obi-Wan film, with the intriguing possibility of Qui Gon Jinn returning as a Force ghost.
