Fans waiting anxiously for Top Gun 2 are going to have to wait a long while.

The initial release date of July 2019 was pushed back nearly a year, to June 26, 2020.

But some good news has trickled out, reinvigorating fan interest in the sequel.

Several new cast members were added to the Top Gun: Maverick list.

Who stars in Top Gun: Maverick?

The actors added to the list of cast members in Top Gun 2 have their roles kept under wraps.

Kara Wang of Freeform/Nuyorican’s series Good Trouble will play one of two female pilots in Maverick.

The other female pilot has already been confirmed as being played by Monica Barbaro.

There are, however, many pilots – despite only having two women – and one new male pilot is played by Jack Schumacher.

Schumacher has appeared on Fox’s TV series Empire and NBC’s series Chicago P.D.

The other new names added to the list are Greg Tarzan Davis (Chicago P.D.), Jake Picking (Sicario: Day of the Soldado, Patriots Day), Raymond Lee (Mozart in the Jungle), Jean Louisa Kelly (Ant-Man) and Lyliana Wray.

From the first Top Gun movie, Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer are reprising their roles as Maverick and Ice Man.

The role of Goose’s son was granted to Miles Teller, but the runner-up for the role Glen Powell was granted an as of yet unnamed role in Maverick.

In addition to them, Jennifer Connelly joins as the female lead, a single mother who runs a bar on the Navy base.

Connolley’s daughter will likely be played by Tasmin McKenzie.

They are joined by Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Lewis Pullman (Bill Pullman’s son), and Manny Jacinto.

Together, this is the complete cast list for the Top Gun sequel.

Most of the characters’ details are being kept strictly under wraps due to their pivotal nature in the Top Gun: Maverick plot.

The plot follows Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, the pilot who became an instructor at the Top Gun school.

He takes Miles Teller’s character under his wing, but not much else is known beyond this.

David Ellison, CEO of Skydance, gave some details of the over-all plot during an interview with Collider.

“It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth-generation fighters,” Ellison said.

He added: “It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today.”

Top Gun: Maverick is out in cinemas on June 26, 2020.
