Fans have been ready for the Top Gun sequel since Tom Cruise and company first shouted about their need for speed.

Now, over thirty years later, those same fans are going to get another taste of it with Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel.

With each addition to the cast list, whether names famous or not, fans get more excited.

The next name to be added is Glen Powell, but who will he play?

You may recognise Glen Powell’s name from a previous Express.co.uk article, speculating on who would be named Goose’s son in the Top Gun sequel.

TOP GUN 2: HAS MILES TELLER WON THE ROLE AS GOOSE’S SON IN TOP GUN 2?

Well, the answer is not Glen Powell – the son will be played by Miles Teller.

But Glen Powell was reportedly so impressive in his audition, that he will, in fact, be joining the Top Gun 2 cast in another role.

Whatever this role may be remains to be seen, but our bet is on Tom “Iceman” Kazansky’s son.

Iceman was played in the original by Val Kimler and he is also returning to the sequel, alongside the new edition of Jennifer Connelly.

Though perhaps not as big a name as his contemporary, Powell has been in the business for a long time.

TOP GUN 2: WILL KELLY MCGILLIS APPEAR IN SEQUEL WITH TOM CRUISE?

He began his career working with Antonio Banderas and Sylvester Stallone in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over.

Then in 2007, he landed a role in The Great Debaters, a movie directed by and starring Denzel Washington.

Since then Powell starred in several popular American series like Scream Queens, Into the West, Jack & Bobby, CSI: Miami, NCIS, Without a Trace, Rizzoli & Isles, and The Lying Game.

He appeared in some other big name movies like The Expendables 3, Ride Along 2, Sex Ed, Stuck in Love, and The Dark Knight Rises.

But UK fans may recognise him from his role as John Glenn in Hidden Figures.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 6 DELETED SCENE: WOULD TOM CRUISE HAVE BEEN BAD?

The Top Gun sequel so far only has a vague plot, described by Skydance CEO David Ellison.

“It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth-generation fighters.”

He added: “It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today.”

For nowthere is still no trailer available, but a likely date for one will be November or December 2018.

Top Gun: Maverick is scheduled for a Friday, July 12, 2019 release.
