Jose Mourinho looked like losing Rooney, with Everton keen to pave a return to Goodison Park for the former Toffees star.

Rooney has also been the subject of huge contract offers from the Chinese Super League.

Reports emerged suggesting the 31-year-old has already begun .

And United have dropped a clear hint over Rooney’s future on Facebook.

He was pictured alongside Jesse Lingard, Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera promoting the club’s new Adidas away kit.

Mourinho was coy over Rooney’s future after the Europa League final win over Ajax last month.

He said: “I told him yesterday that he could be the key man but he can perfectly be here next season.

“He is a very important player for us.”

United jet off for their pre-season tour of America on July 9.

Mourinho is in the market for a striker, with Alvaro Morata the most likely to arrive.

The Portuguese tactician needs a replacement for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has been released by club.
