The Steven Spielberg film, which was released in 1982, actually has a very small pizza-related gaffe.

It was pointed out yesterday on Twitter by Leigh Whannell – the writer of Saw and Insidious – and has been gaining traction ever since.

He wrote: “Won’t stay silent on this bull***t any longer: Right before Elliot’s first encounter with ET, his brothers friends tell him to wait for the pizza delivery guy and get one with ‘pepperoni’ and no ‘little fishies’.

“YOU CAN’T DECIDE WHAT PIZZA YOU WANT A F T E R YOU’VE ORDERED.”

One person responded: “This has bothered me for many years. Thank you for saying out loud #pizzaguyalreadyontheway.”

Another joked: “’ve watched this movie 3 times in the last week and couldn’t be happier someone is finally brave enough to speak up about this. Thank you.”

A third quipped: “Finally, someone is addressing the real problems of E.T.!”

“It’s about time somebody brought this pressing issue to light..,” wrote someone else.

Starring Dee Wallace, Henry Thomas, Peter Coyote, Robert MacNaughton and Drew Barrymore among others, E.T. received universal acclaim and holds a 98% score on aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

It was also a huge commercial success, grossing almost $800 million from only a $10.5 million budget.

In 1982, Spielberg and Melissa Mathison wrote a treatment for a sequel, which would have shown Elliott and his friends being kidnapped by aliens and try to contact E.T. to help them.

This was ultimately canned, however – although E.T. has since been re-released to mark its 20th anniversary, with new extended footage and improved effects.
